台視於1963年7月1日週一 21:15~21:45開始播出本影集，9月份調到每週二20:45~21:15播出，1964年2月11日播畢，此時段由《大衛尼文》影集接替。這部影集由Briskin製片公司製作(在洛杉磯西北方的西米谷Simi Valley拍攝)，授權給其他電視台播放，在美國於1957-58年播出了32集；在英國由公營的BBC播放。
劇情是19世紀末，一列名為「砲球」Cannonball Express號火車的駕駛克西·鐘斯Casey Jones與其組員所經歷的故事。克西與妻子愛麗絲、兒子小克西住在一個虛構的密特維爾鎮(Midvale) - 在密蘇里州聖路易市的附近。片中使用的火車頭之真實名字叫Sierra No.3，建於1891年，常在拍攝電影與電視時使用，如今還能行駛。

美國真的有位火車傳奇駕駛名為Casey Jones(1863-1900)，而且他的司爐工名字也是阿李(Wallie)，與劇中角色同名；然而本影集的故事是虛構的。劇中Casey Jones服務於中西中央鐵路公司Midwest & Central Railroad Compan，真實的Casey Jones任職於伊利諾中央鐵路Illinois Central Railroad。
1900年4月30日晚上，當時密蘇里州的Vaughan有霧且下著雨，Casey Jones駕駛的Cannonball Express客運列車撞上故障的貨運列車。當他們看到鐵軌上有列車時，Casey Jones叫司爐工跳車，他鳴笛警告前方在修車的工人，並且待在火車頭上盡力煞車，使得時速75英哩的火車在撞擊時已減到時速35英哩，救了全車的乘客，Casey Jones是車禍中唯一的喪生者。
