杜比兄弟(The Doobie Brothers)樂團於1970成立於美國加州聖荷西市，鼓手John Hartman與吉他手Tom Johnston是初始的核心團員，找了其他不同的樂手在聖荷西一帶表演。後來找上吉他手Patrick Simmons與貝斯手Dave Shogren成為固定團員。當他們在想要取什麼樂團名字時，樂團的鄰居Keith Rosen建議Tom Johnston「你們為何不取名The Doobie Brothers，因為你們老在抽大麻。」doobie是大麻菸捲。大家都覺得這是個愚蠢的團名，在想出更好的團名之前，暫時用一下；結果就一直沒有更改。
1970年他們在北加州各處表演時，被華納公司的歌手星探注意，於是就與華納唱片簽約，1971年出了第一張專輯。日後人事的變動，至1981年已經沒有任何初始的團員，樂團在1982年解散，至此共出了9張專輯。1987年聚集了11位前團員，開始巡迴演唱，然後自1989~2021年又再出了6張專輯。
China Grove選自他們的第三張專輯"隊長與我"The Captain and Me(1973年)，這張專輯被美國唱片協會(RIAA)認證為2張白金唱片。此曲有發行單曲唱片，最高到達到告示牌Billboard排行榜第15名。

此歌的詞曲由主唱/吉他手Tom Johnston所寫，網上見到一些對歌詞的批評；隱含對華人的微不爽，覺得「他們不是真正的美國人」。歌詞中的「武士刀」也不是中國的東西，伴奏中的一小段「東方風格的鋼琴演奏」也是他自己的想像。雖然樂團發跡的地方(舊金山灣區)有唐人街 /華埠，給他的卻只有刻板印象。
雖然歌曲中的China Grove是個虛構的地方，但是在德州聖安東尼奧市接壤的東方，的確有一個小鎮叫China Grove。
Tom Johnston說有次巡迴演唱時，在聖安東尼奧附近應該見到了China Grove路標，但是馬上就忘了。作這首歌時China Grove是杜撰的(也許存在潛意識中)，事後才知道不但德州有，北卡羅來納州也有China Grove。
專輯封套在Newhall Pass交流道拍攝(洛杉磯北方Sylmar市)，是5號與14號高速公路交會點。斷橋是1971年San Fernando地震造成的，這一段高架公路在1994年Northridge北嶺地震中，再度倒塌。

2001在印地安納州Noblesville的Farm Aid慈善演唱會，為經濟困難的美國農民籌募資金。八字鬍主唱是Tom Johnston (1948 –)，左邊長髮的吉他手Patrick Simmons (1948 –)也是創始團團員。
